I think they've actually done a better job of making each game distinctly its own thing in the nWoD, because with the new emphasis on Storytellers deciding what's true and what's not for their own chronicles and devising their own personal takes on the settings there's already an implicit assumption that people's mileage is going to vary.

Plus lots of people were running the games as though they were all part of one world anyway - including a substantial swathe of the Mind's Eye Theatre crowd - and whilst on the one hand what the fans do doesn't dictate what the publisher thinks, equally the fans (and the more crossover-happy phases of the game line) had established this inertia which was both tremendously hard to reverse and in some cases kind of infectious. On the other hand, you had the themed years during which most of the game lines ended up getting supplements built around that year's theme, you had crossover books like Time of Judgement and so on (yes, I know Time of Judgement is broken down by game line, but equally the very act of producing a supplement that's meant to cover 5 different game lines sends a strong message that those game lines are part of the same package). On the one hand, you had that approach you outlined there.
